Was the Lanchester the best submachine gun of WW2? Its handy add-on made it one of the most convenient weapons for the Royal Vavy.

What I love is how this gun's concept came full circle.
>Germans build MP28
>British copy it and build Lanchester
>British simplify it and build Sten
>Germans copy it, simplify even more and build MP3008 for the Volkssturm.

We have taken the phrase “May have” to it’s breaking point on this one

Forgot to mention that it is a direct copy of the German MP18 / 28.

Alan Turing did more to win WWII than the Lanchester did.

It's near impossible to think of a gun which contributed LESS than the Lanchester to winning ww2...

If one idea/weapon won WW2 it was the proximity fuse. It triggered the nuclear bombs as an air burst device, it was used to trigger the Artillery shells as an air burst during the invasion of Europe, it was used to shoot down V1 rockets and Kamikaze pilots.

"exactly the same reach" holding the WW2 one about a foot lower than the smg.

Lanchester: "Bro, I forgot my homework, can I copy yours?"
Bergmann: "Okay, but make it a little different so they can't tell."

By no stretch of the imagination did this weapon win WWII.

My favorite part was when he explained how this may have won World War II

It's true you know. When the Russians were told that they only had enough Lanchesters for every second man, they left their Mosins behind and only carried a single Lanchester magazine into battle. In Churchill's classic speech, the draft he read from said: "We will fight them on the beaches (with our Lanchesters), we will fight them on the landing grounds (with our Lanchesters), " etc. etc; but he was told it sounded too much like an advertisement. Even the ubiquitous *PING!* of the US infantryman's Lanchester going dry is instantly recognisable in every classic WWII video game.

A SMG or trench shotgun with a sword bayonet mounted on it is a monster of a weapon in cqb situations.

Thanks for travelling through time to explain us this.

My father, a radar PO aboard HMS Berwick, was to carry a Lanchester while in charge of a landing party in Norway after VE-Day, ostensibly to patrol and to prevent any foolishness between the Norwegians and the disarmed Germans. He had never been trained on it, so he found someone in the party who had trained with it and they swapped.

This weapon won ww2 when the german weapon manufacturers saw this bulky submachine gun and had a heart attack and died
