In Rome, being called a king is an insult. Even during imperial times, Roman love to keep the façade that they were ruled by the senate. That’s why one of the unofficial titles of Roman emperors is Princeps civitatis ("First Citizen"). The term emperor comes from imperator, which literally means the one who commands, and doesn’t necessarily have dynastic implications. So, it is easy to see why Roman emperors are wary about generals outside their family became imperators and received triumphs. Also, I didn’t noticed that Walpole was one of the captives in belisarius triumph, nice Extra History gag😂
