Start for spooky. Stay for the emotional trauma as you fully realize your new found favorite characters are not safe and never were.

Side note: By "loses some of it's horror" What that kind of means from my perspective is that it goes a little thriller-y. You lose a lot of mystery as the characters start to figure out what's happening to them, but also the danger becomes more direct. The monster may be better known but it's still coming for you. Good stuff.
