Rome, Italy, December 2022 | The Pantheon & Piazza della Rotonda

Показать описание
The Pantheon in Rome, Italy, is a former Roman temple rebuilt during the reign of emperor Hadrian on the site of an earlier temple commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus (27 BC – 14 AD). Since 609, the Pantheon is a Catholic church, Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs. The building is cylindrical with a portico of large granite Corinthian columns and a large circular domed cella, unique in Roman architecture. It is one of the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings, in large part because it has been in continuous use throughout its history. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. The Pantheon is located on the south side of the Piazza della Rotonda, which gets its name from the Pantheon's informal title as the Church of Santa Maria Rotonda. In the center of the piazza is the Fontana del Pantheon, contructed in 1575 by Giacomo della Porta, surmounted by an Egyptian obelisk, added to it in 1711.
