What happens when a convert tours the Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Provo, Utah for the first time?

In this video, I take you inside the MTC—a place where thousands of young Latter-day Saints prepare to serve missions around the world. As someone who joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints later in life, I’ve always been fascinated by the missionary program and its role as a rite of passage within LDS culture. This tour was a chance to deepen my understanding of this incredible institution and see firsthand how missionaries are trained.

From the massive backlit images of scriptural stories to the Great Commission displayed prominently, the MTC is designed to inspire and prepare missionaries for their 18-month or two-year service. One of the highlights was being invited to observe a Finnish language training session, where missionaries were already speaking Finnish just weeks into their training—a testament to the immersive methods used here.

The campus itself is beautiful, with art, statues and my favorite - baptism pictures in extreme climates. There was a sense of purpose that permeating every corner, and it became clear that the MTC isn’t just about teaching skills; it’s about shaping hearts and minds to exemplify Jesus Christ.

As a convert, I didn’t serve a mission, but I’ve seen the impact of missionary work firsthand. It was missionaries who engaged me with the Church, and their patience, kindness, and dedication changed my life. This tour reminded me of the courage it takes to leave behind comfort and step into the unknown. Whether you’re a member of the Church, a convert like me, or simply curious, I hope this video gives you a deeper appreciation for the missionary journey and the incredible young men and women who embark on it.

One of the gifts of the Spirit, the gift of tongues, lives in the MTCs.

David - I am 40 years old and have been attending The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since I was born. I was baptized at 8 and served a full-time mission for 2 years after attending BYU Provo for one year. When I came home, I taught in the Provo MTC for 3 years. I worked very hard on my mission and very hard at the MTC. I bet you've introduced the Gospel of Jesus Christ to more people through your missionary efforts than I have in my entire life. Thank you for sharing your testimony so valiantly. It is inspiring.

You may not have worn the name tag and been assigned a specific field of labor, but I believe you are on a mission now whether you know it or not. You have been able to reach many people, and through them even more people, in your mission efforts and I think you're doing a phenomenal job. Thank you for what you do.

I spent nine weeks in the Provo MTC in the early 90s to learn Spanish before serving in San Antonio, TX. It is truly a holy place. My son was able to attend the Mexico MTC (CCM) and is currently serving in Costa Rica.🇨🇷 Missions are hard, but are worth the sacrifice. I'm so grateful for the good missionaries you had who helped you in your journey.

I cried tears of joy when you announced you had been baptized. And I think of you whenever I see the cardinal in the Manti temple. ❤

Heavenly Father told me in my first week as a new convert that the best way to say 'thank you' for 'my' missionaries was to become one myself. I was an Au Pair (a nanny) in France at the time with still 9 months to go before returning home to Austria. So I was a member for 2 years and 7 months before I actually went and served in England.
Now I'm a grandmother. Both, my son and my daughter-in-law served their missions in the Hamburg Mission. My older granddaughter will be 9 next month. It will be interesting to see what she decides to do in 10 years time. 😊

I love your description of the Missionary Training Center in Provo. I got to be trained there, and it's one of the most spiritual places I've had the privilege of entering. It's a transformative experience to serve a mission and help others find the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you for this wonderful video!

What a look down memory lane you just gave me!! I was there in 1998. The experience at the MTC, and then my time in Southern Asia as a full-time missionary has absolutely changed and shaped my life into who I am today. I think it was the number 1 factor in turning me into the man I am now. Today I have a wonderful wife and 5 great kids. I run a multi-million dollar business I started and work to bless the lives of my family, my employees, and my clients. My actions and success can absolutely be attributed to my mission and subsequent activity in the church. Thank you sir for such an awesome video experience.

I’ve been there as a senior missionary to be trained. It’s a beautiful place. Loved especially the huge murals. Thank you David for sharing your light and enthusiasm for the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

Loved. Loved. Loved your tour. My husband and I entered the MTC as senior missionaries on July 3 (my birthday) 2017. Liked how you were blown away by the cafeteria. That was one of our favorite times of each day - to eat and talk with those wonderful new missionaries. You will hear over and over members talk about their missions, no matter how long ago they served. And members will always refer to “our/my missionaries, even if those missionaries knocked on their door 50+ years ago.

There were times I was inactive in the church. Not because I didn't believe in the gospel or had issues with the church but, because of weakness and sin. Even then, I could never turn our sweet missionaries away. Whether I offered them something cold to drink or help them get some relief from the scorching summer heat while visiting in my air conditioned living room, I was the one who was blessed by the spirit they would bring into my home. ❤️

We raised our children in Provo Utah. I taught school at Timpview high school and drove up ninth east every day up and back passed the MTC. I loved driving passed there every day. I had three sons who served missions and spent many weeks there. Being a missionary mom was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Now, my oldest grandson is soon preparing to go on a mission. I love being a part of missionary life. I try to reach out every day to someone who needs a smile, a hello, or physical service. I want to be like Jesus Christ and all of us no matter who we are can be missionaries daily! Thank you David, for this video.

I would not trade my mission for anything in the world. Literally. I did not know why God would call me on a mission. As a young woman that was not in my cards at all. But it has become an anchor in my life. My testimony grew a hundred times over and I learned how to really trust in God. Decades later, it's still more valuable to me than my schooling or my career.

Really grateful.
