The Hangover - opening sequence.

Opening sequence to The Hangover. What I like about this opening sequence is that it shows the characters after the disturbance in the film. This means that it is easier to jump straight in to give the viewer an understanding of what the plot is without giving it away. The close ups of the characters show the blood and dirtiness of their faces and the distress of the bride, illustrating that there has been a problem. The depth of field shows a character on the phone with three of the other characters sitting on a damaged car showing that the night before may have been a 'rough night'. This allows the viewer to try and imagine what could have caused the disturbance. Also, the location shots illustrate well the location of the film by filming obvious monuments meaning that the viewer can quickly pick up on.
The music playing at the beginning sets the mood for a happy wedding however as it changes, the atmosphere of the film changes dramatically.

What you describe is called "In medias res" and is a common narrative technique. Quentin Tarantino often uses it.
