INSIGHTS: MAX ROBINSON AND RIDING IN (VERY) LIGHT WIND

Our Team Rider notes how recent advancements in wing foil equipment are permanently reshaping our perception of what's considered too light for a session.

In this video, Max Robinson discusses the revolution sparked by boards like the HIPE Cruzader in the daily routine of passionate wing foilers. No longer do you have to wait for the perfect alignment of forecast and free time to enjoy a session. Just toss your HIPE Cruz in the car and hit the water for a wing foil session, even when the wind doesn't exceed 8 knots. We're witnessing a liberating evolution where constraints fade away, leaving only the best part: the time spent on the water.

Set-up:
Cruzader 7'6
Titanium fuselage
Stab Sirus 50
FW Sirus XL 136
Droid UPE 4.5

I've spent hundreds of hours in winds hovering around the "dead still" to 10 knot range..Why not on a hot summer day? Getting up in the 7-8 knot (8-9mph...13-15kmh...) range though is challenging. We all have light wind dedicated gear around here and there's not much action below the 7-8knot range. I'd love to see this equipment get up in sub 7 knot conditions with live wind readings, couple flags to gauge the wind, view of the water etc. Getting up riding in 3 knots(3.5mph, 5.5kmh..) is dreaming a little. But I'd love to see it live.

Spot on! I love windsurfing (freestyle), but I need something to fit my life. Winging is helping a lot.

Nice kit and great video. I noticed you are using the 7’6” with straps. Any thoughts on the strapped vs. strapless versions of this board for conditions like in this video? Thanks!

It's amazing, it's like an/ Nan je déconne je suis Français. Par contre c'est vrai que le développement du matos et réellement incroyable si tu a le bon quiver c'est tous les jours. Et à 0, 55 la classe j'avais jamais vue ça!

Nice video. If my only use for the board is light wind wingfoiling (no interest in downwinding), which size would be best for an 85 kg rider with intermediate skills? My two current boards are a Naish Hover Carbon Ultra 110 liters and a Fanatic Sky Wing 95 liters. Both of those boards are the older "normal" wingfoiling shapes. I only plan on using the Gong HIPE Cruzader for light wind winging. I plan on continuing to use my other boards for medium to high wind winging, although that could change if I find that I enjoy the Cruzader for more than just light winds. Most of my winging is on flat water although I might start winging in small waves soon.

This is what I am searching for: to substitute windsurfing with another wind based hobby, in very light winds - even formula windsurfing (+12.0 sails..) doesn't work that well, also way too expensive. I am 105kg, so probably wing foiling is the last line of defense below 8knots or am I asking too much perhaps? 😮

I am 85 kilos and I normally go on the Gong Hipe First 110L. I use the Curve XL front wing and a 46 cm stab. Does the cruzader work with that foil setup as well or do you really have to buy a specific foil for it?

Great Video! I have the same board (strapless version), with HM79 mast, Sirus XXL foil and Sirus 56 stab. Have been really enjoying flying in 5-7kn on our Swiss lake in a 2021 6M Neutra. I am 65kg. The challenges have been riding toeside and jibes as I cannot find the right mix to get the board to do a steady turn without losing speed and becoming unbalanced. Any tips?

Is that board hard to stand up on after you fall? It looks awesome, but it's pretty narrow.

Hey Max, is that titanium fuselage absolutely necessary for lightwind riding with that Syrus 136? setup? I am running a Fluid XXLT on my Cruzader and am considering something that helps with the low end even more.
