I worked at a company with no HR and my boss was high school best friends with her boss.
I started noticing discrimination in our intern hiring process and it made me extremely uncomfortable and frustrated with the company. I felt like I had no one to turn to, so I quit. (& honestly, I had some of the largest responsibilities with the org.)

Get HR.

Currently I am working at a startup company with no HR and it feels really uncomfortable to have to go to my boss (CEO) for every little thing. It makes me look like a very needy person who can not be independent.

Interesting conversation but couldn't most HR issues be solved by having an upfront strategy and learning from past mistakes of startups. Plus issues like vacation and benefits can be handled by software with reminders.
