In Judas' Regret (1880), Almeida Júnior captures the anguished moment when Judas Iscariot is consumed by the weight of his betrayal. Slumped against a stone wall, isolated and tormented, Judas holds his head in despair while coins (thirty pieces of silver) lay scattered at his feet, a stark symbol of the price for which he betrayed Jesus. His expression and posture reveal a man overwhelmed by remorse. Just days earlier, he handed over his teacher, never imagining that it would lead to crucifixion. In the background, barely visible yet unmistakably powerful, three crosses rise on the hill of Golgotha, confirming that it is already too late.

Judas had tried to undo what he had done. He returned the money, pleaded with the temple priests, but his actions could not be reversed. Jesus had been condemned, the crowd had chosen, and the judgment was final. Almeida Júnior doesn't portray Judas as a villain here, but rather as a tragic figure, broken by guilt and desperate for forgiveness he believes is out of reach. The painting becomes a meditation on regret and the human longing for redemption, forcing us to ask: can someone ever fall so far that grace cannot find them?

"Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over[...] Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned, ” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”

So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself."

Forgiveness Greed Betrayal Regret Loss Guilt. For me this is the story of Jesus and Judas. Jesus knew he would be betrayed. There is one last word though Love. Jesus Loved Judas any way and in the end that is what really cause Judas to take is own life. He realized that even this outcome Jesus knew and chose to Love him break bread with him wash his feet and spend time with him. Jesus Loved Judas even though he knew the out come. I run towards this everyday and fall short. The level of Love and Forgiveness Jesus carried in one strand of hair can I only hope to express in my life. I was closer to it as a child/teenager/early20s. Now I feel farther from it than ever. Jesus please bring my heart back to forgiveness. 🙏🏾

The use of color in the background scene is so cool and my favorite part of this painting

I’m crying on right now. It’s hard to think about how one of the disciples believe he couldn’t be forgiven.

To imagine Jesus face when he got resurrected and saw that there is only 11 disciples left.
That’s truly devastating.

In a way it’s probably one of the best pieces of art in history because what it means and how can we all relate to him when we made a big mistake and are imperfection it’s truly a master piece of the human nature thats hard to control but ur really not a bad person at the end because u regret everything u done it was just the mission I have a person in my family who served and can relate to Judas in those ways it’s never think about the battle until it’s over

As a devout Catholic, the story of Jesus and Judas always intrigued me. Judas regretted his actions - does that mean he could go to heaven? As terrible as it was for him to betray Jesus, I can’t help feeling sympathy for him when it’s clear how much he regrets his actions. (One of my favorite depictions of Judas’ guilt is in the Passion of the Christ movie!) I don’t believe he is ‘evil’, no human is. He just took the wrong path in life and chose to leave God.

The crazy thing is Jesus saved him too. You are never too lost, brother. He loves you.

Honestly apart from Christ's death (an innocent and best man ever to live to be killed and tortured in the worst way imaginable) the second worst tragedy of the story is that Judas thought he was beyond forgiveness and therefore hope, when Jesu went to the cross *for* him. Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 peices of silver, but we betray God everyday for much much less. Thank God we arent too sinful for forgiveness, if only we sincerely amd humbly ask. Wonderful art peice, thanks for sharing.

Judas' sin was thinking that his sins were beyond God's forgiveness and love.

Read Acts 1:17-19…..it tells you what really happened. Judas bought a field with the money he received by betraying Jesus. But he died in his own field and the people called it “Alkadama”, meaning field of blood. Happy resurrection day, god bless!

The unforgivable sin is believing God wont forgive you. Jesus would have forgiven Judas just as he forgave Peter. God offers an ocean of mercy. ❤✝️

Idk why but my heart just truly breaks for Judas aswell, to know that he was a believer of Christ yet still decided to betray him because he supposed he hadn't seen enough, once Jesus was condemned he felt remorse and horrible for his decision and instead of repentance and asking for Forgiveness he chose to kill himself. He was also only human himself. It also makes me think of how most of us are today😕😞🙏🏾🙏🏾💔

Judas was a grave example of the unforgivable sin. To know Christ, to believe Him, to have a full testimony and understanding of who God and the Holy Spirit is, and to blaspheme the Spirit in such a way as to hand Him over to those who seek His destruction. The unforgivable sin is blaspheming the spirit in full knowledge....for which Judas did.

And that's not how forgiveness work in Christianity, yes we can't reverse our sins but God can forgive us and even forget what we have done. So be joyful, be at peace and God bless.

He was sorry so I understand ❤ atleast he felt remorse but killing himself is not what Jesus wanted. Jesus is pure love. The way, the truth and the light.
