Pauwlipvis/Ornate wrasse (Thalassoma pavo)

De vis kan een lengte bereiken van 20 cm. Evenals de regenbooglipvis is de vis hermafrodiet. Alle vissen beginnen daarbij als vrouwtjes. Mannetjes vertonen puntige uitlopers aan de staartvin. Er bevindt zich op de rug halverwege de rugvin een zwarte stip. Het lichaam is langwerpig met een groenige basiskleur en verticale strepen. Op de kop bevinden zich grillige blauwe of groene strepen. De vis komt in de zomer voor langs rotswanden van de Middellands Zee. In de nacht verbergt hij zich in het zand.

The ornate wrasse is a species of the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. In the eastern Atlantic it occurs from Portugal southwards along the coast of West Africa as far as Senegal. It also occurs around the Macaronesia, archipelagoes of the Cape Verde Islands, Canary Islands, Madeira, Salvage Islands and the Azores. In the Mediterranean it occurs all along the African and Asian coasts and most of the northern coasts except for the northern parts of the Adriatic and some parts of the north western Mediterranean. However, global warming may be allowing ornate wrasse to extend its range northwards and it has increasingly been collected in the Ligurian Sea and off Provence. It is absent from the Black Sea.
