The biggest challenge to coral reef restoration in Hawai’i is due to what Hawai’i is famous for: Waves.

O’ahu coral reefs are primarily made up of fringing reefs, which drop in depth quickly and don’t provide protection. This is unlike barrier reefs with calm lagoons. You see barrier reefs in places like French Polynesia.

Solution: Kuleana Coral has identified best practices for their attachment methods to give the re-planted coral the best chance of remaining on the reef and surviving.

Kuleana Coral, in partnership with Sheba US and Sheba Hope Grows are working together to test these new attachment methods.
