Marshalling Yard Ljubljana Zalog, Slovenia - Aerial view

In this video you can see an aerial view of various trains passing and waiting on the biggest Marshalling Yard in Slovenia, Ljubljana Zalog (ranžirna postaja Zalog) in Slovenia. This video was filmed in October 2022.

Trains are decomposed and composed on the rail yard: arriving freight trains are first decomposed, the separated cars are then sorted and collected according to different criteria (destination, car type, content, railroad company, etc.). Finally new trains are composed.

The rail yard has :
Receiving (Arrival) Yard where trains arrive, locomotives are detached, freight and wagons are inspected;
Classification (Marshalling) Yard where wagons are sorted and collected into blocks/groups for particular directions or destinations;
Departure Yard where different car blocks are composed into new trains, locomotives are attached, freight charts are prepared and other departing tasks are executed;
A Hump, that is a small hill, over which separate wagons are pushed from Receiving to Classification Yard (gravity is used to propel the cars to various sorting tracks).
