St. Blaise and the Blessing of the Throats

Bishop Reed offers the blessing of the throats through the intercession of St. Blaise, whose feast is February 3rd. Bishop Reed explains why St. Blaise is invoked for protection against disease of the throat and how this blessing relates to the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas, celebrated on February 2nd.

I was born with a birth defect in my airway and had a trachiotomy as an infant and toddler. At 3 1/2, my trach was removed for good back in 1986. I was raised Catholic. One time, as a young child, my parents took me to get blessed by a priest on the Feast of St. Blaise day. The priest placed two long candle sticks crossed together forming an X around my neck and the priest prayed over me. My Dad told me years later, that after the blessing as we walked away, I looked back over my shoulder with this puzzling stare. As a young kid, I thought it was the most bizarre thing but special at the same time.
