If only the creator of the Walkie Talkie had named it, it could've been the Yankee Janky

I remember seeing a documentary segment on this year's ago. futon's son said he was watching the bond film thunderball in the cinema. At the end of the film bond is picked up by the sky hook. A man behind him remarked that it was rubbish and total fantasy that someone could be picked up by the sky hook. Funny thing is that it was about the only authentic thing about the film.

Man, at first it looked like a sling-shot, like they were being launched AT the hook. I was like 'holy crap'. It was like the gnomes in Dragon Lance.

I know a lot of people will know this from MGSV, but it was also in MGS3 as how he was picked up from the "Virtuous Mission", the first mission that goes wrong.

Thinking about the physics and engineering of this, it would have been possible to manage the g-shock and g-force of the pickup by using essentially the same tech we use today in fall arrest harnesses.

A good introduction!

Though, you missed this beautiful statement about the system's testing in the Wiki

"After experiments with instrumented dummies, Fulton continued to experiment with live pigs, as pigs have a nervous system close to humans.
Lifted off the ground, the pig began to spin as it flew through the air at 125 miles per hour (200 km/h). It arrived on board uninjured, but in a disoriented state. When it recovered, it attacked the crew."

I don't know about you, but if I was spun through the air at 125mph I might be a little tetchy after...

Now I know why my father (who served in the RCAF from 48-58, used to say "How are you getting up there, by skyhook? He was a pilot and I thought he was just being silly.
