BRICS' Shocking 2025 Decision: A Game-Changer for the US, G7, and the UN's Future?

The BRICS group has long represented a coalition of emerging economic powers committed to reshaping global economic governance. Initially, the BRICS nations focused on strengthening integration and cooperation among their founding members, allowing for alignment on economic and geopolitical objectives. This cautious strategy enabled the group to develop effective cooperation mechanisms and enhance its collective influence in global affairs.

However, a pivotal shift occurred during the 16th BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024. With the growing importance of a multipolar world and the need to tackle pressing global challenges like economic inequality, energy security, and climate change, BRICS reassessed its expansion strategy. The summit marked a turning point, with the BRICS nations agreeing to adopt a new growth model: the partnership model, as opposed to direct membership.

What is the BRICS Partnership Model?

The partnership model is a more pragmatic approach to expansion, offering a path for emerging economies to join BRICS without becoming full members—a process that can be lengthy and complex. Instead of adding new members, BRICS invited selected countries to join as partner states. This expansion model allows BRICS to extend its influence and foster stronger economic ties with other emerging nations while maintaining the cohesion and operational efficiency of the original bloc. Partner states will engage in specific initiatives, contribute to BRICS projects, and align with the group’s strategic goals while preserving their sovereignty and unique developmental paths.

BRICS Plus: A Global Economic Powerhouse

Now informally known as BRICS Plus, the group’s expansion has significantly amplified its global presence. As of 2024, BRICS Plus accounts for about 37.3% of the world’s GDP in purchasing power parity (PPP), surpassing the G7’s share of 30%. In terms of population, BRICS Plus represents nearly half of the world’s population, underlining its demographic significance. Additionally, the bloc now commands two-fifths of global trade in goods, reinforcing its vital role in international commerce.

Before diving into the 20 countries expressing interest in joining BRICS as partner states, it’s crucial to recognize the group’s existing global standing and influence. BRICS Plus continues to reshape global trade, economics, and geopolitics, positioning itself as a central force in the world’s economic future.
