You start on a bodyboard, endless you have someone teaching you everything

Sharpest possible foil for sure that way you dont have to learn to stand. Also find the most crowded wave possible so you can use the other surfers to line up.

If you want to surf year round on the east coast, you pretty much have to have a soft top.

No start with a fish type of board relatively wide and has some volume but not touch because a foam board does not cary over to a shoetboard best

idk foam boards were so flimsy and unstable for me I caught my best beginner waves on an actual fiberglass longboard, has the most stability

If you want to shortboard, start off with an oversized shortboard.
