Here's a quick demo recording directly into the Alesis iO Dock for iPad using a Blueberry condenser microphone on both acoustic guitar and vocals directly into Garageband for iPad.

@TGITechday

Generally a Cardioid Condenser microphone has one side that picks up the sound to be recorded, the other side(s) are used for noise cancellation and ambience. This means that the microphone will be either standing upright or downwards.

When pointed downwards, the cable is out of the way of any equipment such as music stands or the mixing console. Some use it upside down to pick up vibrations from the voicebox and the neck.

Thats the extent of my knowledge, hope this helps!

yes. when you create a Real Instrument track, Garageband defaults tracks to Mono recording. at the bottom right of the screen there is a tab that says "input source". Click on it, and scroll down to the Stereo selection. Click on Stereo, and your track is now in stereo, not mono. Cheers.

@jonnybeats12 Ah I see.. makes sense. I can understand when it's pointed down when people use a boom stand when they podcast or are at a desk to save space but there seems to be a lot of empty space so it didn't seem very necessary =P I use a Snowball to record so I generally just have it upright haha =P Thanks for the informative and polite response! =]

@Luger718A1 Seriously though, for $700 you get an iPad (that does more than just record, obviously) and the iO Dock, and it records in 24/48 to GarageBand. From there I can dump it to Logic and continue working on stuff. 15 years ago I paid more money for an 8-track to cassette from Tascam, and it sounded like crap by comparison. The power of what you can do in such a small size is pretty amazing. No, it's not a Pro Tools rig. It's not meant to be.

@Luger718A1 Yes, you should buy a Mini if you have nothing at all. No, the iPad doesn't replace a computer. It also doesn't mean an iPad is useless, a poor value, or a waste of time. It has a place, and it's still reasonably priced when coupled with the iOS Dock. There, happy!? You win at the Internet.

@Luger718A1

Yeah not the alesis dock, I didn't see how expensive that was, but otherwise an iPad is worth the investment, condsidering all it does on top of being high quality portable recording/editing equipment, it's not expensive. But yeah it's not cheap either

Also a little room treatment will go a long way for your sound.... Maybe convert a closet to vocal booth?

@Luger718A1 Bro, its not meant to replace Ocean Way Studios. But go back 30 years, and I bet someone probably said, 'Digital recording is expensive! There's cheaper ways to do it, such as using magnetic tape.' Now, hardly anyone records on magnetic tape. So we're still a longgg way from having pristine mobile recording technology, but all in good time, mate. All in good time. :-)

I think you should focus your camera on you instead of the mic, it would look a little nicer. What software did you use? Good stuff!

@Luger718A1
well i got a ipad 2 and a mac mini and im great, i wouldn't put money into a Alesis iO Dock, but the Ipad is a must for me..and i was skeptical but there are so many music apps now, which are 20 bucks too the most..when software runs from 100-1, 000..search the net and check out the apps!

Great!!! I have a question: I can only record my voice on the left or right channel.... is it possible to record it in both channels?? Thanks!

Have you ever used the iodock in a live situation, so as a live mixer?

@Luger718A1 Either way this is a dumb argument. I disagree with you, I think it's a good value, especially since the iPad is often used for a myriad of other things, and the quality for remote recording is now great too. Use what you like.

@Luger718A1 because when im touring and traveling i can record sketch tracks to memorize while im out then when i come home ill hit the studio, its a lot less equipment and wires (which equal headaches there selves) and only takes 3 mins to record a vocal and im done..now i would never record album on there, at least till they get better pre's :)

I've never really understood this, but why is the microphone pointed downward? /noobquestion

@Luger718A1 See what happens is you put the iPad in the iO Dock, connect a microphone, and then record stuff. It's pretty simple, actually. :)

@kingofnothing26 read my other comments.... to some it all up...if you already have an ipad and want to "dabble" go right ahead....if you dont dont go headfirst into recording with an ipad in mind when theres more cost effective ways
