What you failed to mention is those friendlies were against small clubs that were nowhere near the level of santos fc and weren't even in the first division of their domestic league.

The stadiums were filled because a big club was facing what is essentially a sunday league team. Of course they'd show.

At that time, santos fc was poor, so they would play a lot of friendlies (playing friendlies was pretty much santos's official matches) so they could sustain the maintenance costs
