Rwanda and Cameroon announced significant adjustments to their security forces on Wednesday in response to the military coup that removed President Ali Bongo from office in Gabon.
According to Anadolu Agency, the development had an impact on high-ranking military members.
President Paul Kagame of Rwanda retired at least 678 soldiers when their contracts expired and released 160 others for medical reasons, while also promoting a number of new soldiers inside the nation's security forces.
Additionally, the President named new generals to lead army divisions stationed across the nation.
The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) said that Kagame has "approved the retirement of a dozen generals, 83 senior officers, and six junior officers." According to the statement, he also gave the go-ahead for the retirement of 86 senior non-commissioned officers.
Earlier on Wednesday, Kagame also named new generals to lead military divisions and elevated a number of junior officers to the rank of colonel.
The study made note of the fact that several veterans of the old guard, including Gen. James Kabarebe, Gen. Fred Ibingira, and Lt. Gen. Charles Kayonga, were among those who had retired.
Both Kabarebe and Kayonga have previously held the position of chief of defence staff for the Rwandan army.
Maj. Gen. Albert Murasira, a former defence minister, and Lt. Gen. Frank Mushyo Kamanzi, Rwanda's ambassador to Russia, were among the other generals to retire.
