Genesis is true history & scientifically accurate
(see Dr. Hugh Ross) You have to interpret and get the point of view correct (the Spirit of God between the waters and the clouds; not looking down from space) then Genesis 1 jives w what we know about the history and development of Earth. Snakes can't talk; but spirits (angels/demons) can take control of animals, like Balaam's donkey; the snake didn't speak, it was Lucifer communicating through it.

Unfortunately the RCC is wrong about the inspiration and inerrancy of scripture; scripture is infallible, not the church. We can prove the reliability, historicity and scientific accuracy of scripture; to include the first eleven chapters of Genesis. If you don't believe in the historicity of Adam and Eve then you are at odds with Jesus and the Apostles themselves. Btw: i think about 30 bishops at the Council of Trent argued against including the Apocryphal books to the official Canon. Those books were always contested by some of the biggest names in the Church; including Gregory the Great and Jerome.
