This song was composed by Eiichi Ohtaki, a famous Japanese songwriter, in 1980. His friend and co-author Takashi Matsumoto wrote the Japanese lyrics "Saraba Siberia Tetsudo" (Farewell Siberian Railway ; A December Traveler) for this song. Initially, Ohtaki himself planned to sing this song, but due to Ohtaki's intention, the popular Japanese singer Hiromi Ohta recorded this song first, and the single record was released on November 21, 1980. Russia at that time was the Soviet Union, and it was unusual in Japan to make a popular song depicting Russian scenery.

The version sung by Ohtaki was recorded as the last song of his album "A LONG VACATION" released on March 21, 1981. This album was a big hit. This album is still known as one of the best pop / rock albums in Japan.
The musicians who participated in the production of "A LONG VACATION" also recorded an electric guitar instrumental version of this song.

In 1984, The Mustangs album producer Olle Salo bought "A LONG VACATION" from a record store in Osaka. He introduced this album to the members of The Mustangs in Finland. The members were so impressed with the "Saraba Siberia Tetsudo" and they decided to cover this song themselves and recorded this version as "Siberia".
