The triarchic theory of intelligence characterizes intelligence in terms of distinct components rather than as a single ability. Formulated in the 1980s by Robert Sternberg, the triarchic theory distinguishes three aspects of intelligence: analytic skills, such as the ability to think abstractly and evaluate information; creativity, the ability to invent novel solutions or ideas; and practical skills, which enable one to cope with concrete situations. Sternberg believed that intelligent tests often wrongly ignored creativity and practical skills. He also argued that intelligence involves distinct cognitive processes: metacomponents (planning and decision-making skills), performance components (what people do while carrying out plans), and knowledge-acquisition components (skills necessary for learning). Some psychologists believe the triarchic theory explains intelligence; others disagree.
