If you look at pugs in old paintings, they had much longer muzzles (almost like a chihuahua). They also had longer legs and a more robust body. The modern pug is an unfortunate result of bad breeding and breeding for looks and not for health.

He literally looks like a loaf of bread. Hope he gets better tho

Imagine if dogs were bred focusing on health and longevity instead of extreme aesthetics. We could be living in a world where the average dog could easily live to be over 20 years old and still be active and healthy.

Pugs alone have been bred to have a short snout and they already have breathing problems.

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU FATTEN THE POOR THING.

STOP BREEDING PUGS LIKE THIS. THIS IS JUST NOT ETHICAL. PUGS SHOULD NOT BE SNORTING LIKE THAT.

Why he is having trouble breathing:

1. He's fat
2. He’s a pug and pugs have flat faces which means they all have trouble breathing because people find the flat faces cute and it’s really cruel that they are still being bred for human happiness

If pugs had trouble breathing before, this pug is in pug hell-on-earth.

how could his owners look at him struggle to breathe and think “yeah, lets overfeed him!”

Most pugs have a slight breathing issue since their face are so shrinked and internals smaller. Good job dog breeders. Can never get a cute enough dog. Smh

Absolutely horrible and no excuse for it. Pugs should not be over max weight of 25lbs. Total abuse on the owner.. The owner more than likely has trouble breathing.. What a shame...

Last June (2015) I rescued a 15 year old pug. He was really skinny and from proper feeding he gained weight and got up to 20 pounds. He started an awful hacking sound. The vet did x-rays and found he had what was called collapsed trechia (spelled wrong). So he had to take prednisone every day. He was on that for 6 months then he became very ill. His liver and kidneys had failed and we had to lay him to rest on 5/13/16. I only had him a short time but I loved that old guy.

Had a pug for 16 years. Walked her regularly and fed her appropriately. She needed heartworm meds, but she never got overweight or had breathing issues. Arthritis was an issue from a car accident, but she was very active. She was a great dog.

They bred pugs to the point where their sculls look like a tuna can

This reminds me of when my evolution professor said: "you have to allow natural selection to take its course." At this point, you're just hurting the animal by putting so much effort into keeping them alive. That's actually cruel.
