Back when my parents first started dating my mum had yet to be diagnosed with bipolar depression and OCD. She would scream at my dad at the top of her lungs for the silliest things (she once yelled at him for leaving muddy shoes in her trunk). Every time she did this and realized her error all she could think was “oh god, he’ll leave me for sure!” But he never did. My mother has developed a host of both physical and mental problems since then and despite it all my parents have remained happily married for 27 years. To this day my mum still can’t believe she managed to find such an amazing man.

When I'm having a really hard time, he'll always bring me one of my favorite wines and a good chocolate bar when he comes over. If I'm REALLY in a bad time, sometimes he'll just show up unannounced and surprise me with goodies and a bear hug if he's not working, even if he can only stay for 10 minutes before work. Sometimes he'll bring me flowers for no reason. Material affection aside, he always makes me feel better when I'm upset and when I break down and start crying out of nowhere (I try not to but it happens sometimes), he drops everything and lays with me cuddling while I work through it and process my feelings. He never makes me feel lesser than or gets mad at me when not doing well and doesn't let me say bad things about myself. And unfortunately the last little while I've been between jobs and he's never made me feel bad for not being able to contribute much. He's so supportive and he'll help with whatever I ask when he comes over, even if it's as simple asking him to reach something high or kill a spider. He always makes me laugh and so much more. We just work so we'll together and I love him so much. I always try to do nice things for him like bake for his DND friends or make something I think he'll like and make sure he's completely comfortable when he's here. I want to be there for him the way he is for me but he's very well rounded and mentally stable and just hasn't needed me yet. And I'm happy for that, I don't want him to be sad. I'm kind of a mess but I still do my best to be as good as possible to him because he deserves nothing but love, he's so wonderful. I've never loved someone so much.

I do the stay up one but my boyfriend doesn't always call. I don't think he understands that I want to do it and am a little hurt when he is being considerate because I want to, so he knows how much I love him (I want to be woken up damn you!). Also when I tease him he never plays into it so my jokes and stuff are dead on arrival

It's nice to hear of some genuinely happy marriages. I was married to my wife for 46 years until she died of cancer. I don't think she loved me and it showed. But we got along pretty good. But now I've met a new woman, and she does so much to show her live for me and I try to do the same for her. We're engaged and I can't wait to marry her and spend every night together. Genuine love is a rare thing. If you find it, care for the person with all you've got. Most couples don't have such joy.
