China Reveals Key Info on YJ-21 Hypersonic Anti-ship Missile

The PLA disclosed the performance of its latest anti-ship hypersonic missile, the YJ-21. This is the only anti-ship ballistic missile in the world able to be launched from a warship, the Type 055 destroyer.

If YJ-21 works as advertised with Mach 10 terminal velocity (interception effectively impossible) then a single 055 DDG in theory can take out an entire USS carrier battle group.

There is an interview on the internet of a US Navy Officer, they monitored the YJ-21 test in February 2022, where the missile hit a moving target in the China Sea... a target at 25 knots. .. incredible

There is a channel called Grim Reapers that did several war game simulations using DCS between the US/UK and China carrier groups. Their initial setup was already flawed; moreover, the mach 4 termial speed was used for YJ21 in DCS, which was intercepted by Aster SAMs on type 45 destroyers with more than 70% probability. They had quite a lot of "high" in DCS cheering for US/UK victory. It sounds pretty pathetic to me that the only way that they feel winning now is in DCS with unrealistic parameters (similar to a cheat mod per se). 😂.

This will for sure breach missile export treaties and it will be extremely interesting to find out what China says about it. Rumor says Saudi and UAE are buying 052DLs and very likely with the YJ21Es.

This is the ship based 21D anti-ship ballistic missile, and there is a land mobile launcher version and an air launched H-6L bomber based version. It's difficult or impossible to intercept hypersonic missile because it gives very little to no time to react. It takes tracking to intercept it, even laser interceptor needs accurate, up to the moment missile location information. Non-intermediate range strategic ballistic missiles travel high in space, over the horizon radar can detect and predict its ballistic trajectory. This is a satellite guided missile that travels in a flat trajectory in near space.

The YJ21 has a terminal speed of Mach 10 when the target has been identified and fixed. That means that it cannot be destroyed in midair without causing the debris to hit the target ship at very high speed. China is developing even more advanced anti-ship hypersonic missiles which will give the PLAN an absolute superiority over the usa fleet when it is coming to aid Taiwan. The YJ21 alone is already a game changer in any sea battle in the South China Sea.

Since the 052D has the same UVLS as the 055, it would be foolish not to give them the YJ-21.
