Basil gets leggy like that when it doesn’t get enough light. With lots of light the nodes are tighter and it grows more bushy. I had the best results inside when using a fluorescent grow light with a small hydroponic setup. A one foot square container using deep water culture with six small pots produced tons of basil with leaves the size of my hand.
