Ian: “You can’t castle, you are in check!”
Wesley: So?

This is why you don't grind duck chess before a tournament

for those who don't understand why Wesley thinks he can castle:
- It's Chess960
- The King and rook haven't moved yet

People: Focus on drama
Legends: Focus on Nepo's tummy

Wesley must've thought that this is an exception to the rule- since the King doesn't need to move at all (technically the King doesn't try to move out of check). Instead, the Rook would move two squares over, blocking the check, while the King just stands still.

Can't even imagine Nakamura's face if he could have seen that position before the arbiters came. 🤣

Wesley must have gotten used to playing Duck Chess (where you can actually castle out of a check)

Funny how even the current Fischer World Champion tried to castle out of check hahaha

I feel like we really need a Jomboy breakdown for this moment…

Plot twist:
Wesley missed the move Qa8 so he acted as if he didn't know the rules.

I wrote this under another video, but I will also write it here: Maybe he tried to argue that according to fide rules the castling he wanted to do is called in their rulebook for chess960 a "rook-move-only castling" [by making only a move with the rook] and thus he did not move his king. The normal chess rules do state (and I am sure he knows) that "castling is prevented temporarily: if the square on which the king stands, or the square which it must cross, or the square which it is to occupy, is attacked by one or more of the opponent's pieces [...]" So he maybe thought the chess960 rules would take precedence

I think that because the "motion of castling" would be to just block the king with the rook, he messed up and played as if the rook could "block the check."

"Nepo is not happy" Huh? Nepo just seemed to be confused about what Wesley was thinking by making such a novice mistake.

That castling is called "rock-move-only castling" up to FIDE rules. Apparently many players (including So and Magnus) interpret this as a rock move not a castle move.

Just like in regular chess, you can't castle when your king is in check in 960. Strange So didn't know that.

wesley pretending he was calculating the moves but he just messed up 😂

What is really confusing is they are showing Wesley as white in the beginning graphic when he was playing black.
