The forests of Western Ghats, 40 percent of which lie in Kerala, are among the oldest ecosystems and one of the eight ‘hottest hotspots’ of biological diversity in the world. Kerala has 17 wildlife sanctuaries, 5 national parks and 19 serial sites of Western Ghats that fall under the UNESCO World Heritage list. Amidst its deciduous, evergreen and shola forests live some of the Earth's endangered species of flora and fauna.
