ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
A student of such prestigious institutions as the Berklee College of Music in Boston and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, author of albums praised in the columns of the New York Times and Downbeat magazine, and contributor to projects such as Charlie Haden’s Land of the Sun and the beautiful River: The Joni Letters, a tribute to Joni Mitchell, Lionel Loueke is an accomplished guitarist. Originally from Benin, a cradle of sub-Saharan mysticism in connection with the Voodoo cult, this instrumentalist goes beyond the strict musical framework to the point that Herbie Hancock has compared him to a painter.

Echoing a reading by the aforementioned pianist, Lionel Loueke occupies the space here with a remarkable introduction in which the six-string virtuoso weaves unbreakable links between the pentatonic scales of the first continent, a first-rate American blues touch, and a rhythm that reflects urban domains such as funk. Filled with scats and other mouth effects, this guitarist's set also approaches the shores of the song through subtle and dreamy chords as induced by the bridge (in suspension) situated in the middle of the concert. However, whether he starts with an up-tempo track or extends the whole thing with an evanescent melody, Lionel Loueke offers a unique performance, with this nagging impression of listening, not to a single performer, but to a complete musical ensemble…
