AFI Review Series Part 9 - Decemberunderground

AFI released Decemberunderground on 6/6/06 and showed that they had no intentions of moving backwards with their sound.

Haven't listen to AFI since Art of Drowning. Did not like Sing the Sorrows, was completely blown away by Decemberunderground. One of their heaviest albums, the guitar work is amazing and Davey's growling screams during the bursts of extreme emotional release on a few of the tracks brought me back to being a fan again. Very profesional and evolved sound.

This album has grown on me over the years.
Imo the second half is much better then the first half.
Get passed love like winter and I find that's where the best songs are.
The affliction, the missing frame, kiss and control, killing lights, 37m, endlessly, she said are all excellent songs that carry the old afi style.

But I do know alot of people prefere miss murder, summer shudder, love like winter.

In 2006 as a teenager I thought this was meh. In 2020 DU has become my most listened to album on Spotify. As a producer myself I can appreciate the craft displayed on these recordings. You definitely notice the quality drop in the mixes along with questionable arrangement choices and composition on their followup albums. They probably started working with other producers or started trying to do it on their own. Either way DU and STS are the best sounding records they released.

I used to hate this, but I started listening to a lot of 80s synthwave and coldwave, so I get what they were trying to do. I've been listening to it a lot lately.

Man i have more hard time to adapt from the art of drowning to sing the sorrow, and i really prefer decemberunderground.

Loving these reviews but I think this is one of their best albums. And I'm saying that as a fan
since 98. Miss Murder is the only track on here that I dislike. I think this album has some of the best lyrics that Havok has ever written and they have definitely gotten weaker since. I'd say Kiss and Control is one of the best AFI tracks ever released.

Bro, you don't understand AFI, DecemberUnderground is an Epic album, the creativity is out the door, no one other album could compare to this. The screams, the synths, the lyrics, the rythim, the concession is there.

Not to mention it's their first and only #1 Billboards hot 100 album. This album is iconic.
