Will the Russian war in Ukraine spread to neighboring countries? Belarus has already joined the attack on Kyiv. NATO is sending additional forces to Poland, the Baltic Republics and other countries on the eastern flank. Will it be enough to prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from attacking another country? Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks says he thinks Ukraine will win the war and that Putin has united the West. He also said he thought Ukrainians deserved to be granted EU candidate status and had paid with their blood.

Artis Pabriks joined DW's Sarah Kelly for a special edition of Conflict Zone.

This was a very interesting and impressive interview with Latvian Defence Minister Artis Pabriks. His analysis of the situation was lucid, cogent, and insightful from the perspective of a nation that is a member of NATO and borders Russia. We stand with Ukraine.

I love the Baltic nations. Great people, great culture and balls of titanium.

she made up a list of answers she intended to hear from him before this interview, and she simply focused on just getting those answers rather than really listening to what he was meaning to say. I wish he was interviewed by somebody else

He speaks many truths and boldly. He is a good leader. Good luck Latvia and thank you for standing strong

My impression is that P is more angry about the economic pressure created by the west, then by the fact that weapons are sent to support Ukrain. He cares less about his militaire personal being shot at.

Poland's military since joining NATO is top-notch. Not to mention being attacked by Russia/USSR in 1939 and almost 50 years of Soviet occupation, Poland will fight!🇵🇱

I like that guy! He is not a bullshitter at all, straight forward, and concise with his answers, and obviously full of compassion for the situation at hand, as are so many leaders right now. I've never, in my life seen so many country's leader thinking along the same lines to resolve an issue. It's heartfelt, and refreshing.

This man shows a great rationale. And seems like a fine world leader

You have to give her credit, she spent 12-minutes trying to convince him, “the sky is falling!” Yet he knows that Putin has already lost!!!

As a pole i am most impresssed with the interviewer's question and unbiased, careful stance towards the current situation. It is good to see a shift in Germany's perception od Russia and its antics. As for the Baltic States, they have always been our allies and friends since we escaped the USSR and i look forward to support them in the future.

Said with much dignity and common sense, Mr Pabriks, thank you! Apart from the catastrophe in Ukraine, if I am allowed a dose of cynicism, Russians have achieved the counterintuitive - a solidified West and hopefully Finland and Sweden in the NATO!

I love DW, but this was such a dumb article. People, next in line would be Moldova and Georgia, at least their separatist republics. Interview didn't even mention this. Just looked totally clueless.

Russia's threat of nuclear forces on "special alertness" is the equivalent of preheating a toaster

The interview is great, with Kelly asking great probing questions… until she faceplants by repeating a false RUS talking point, as the LVA DM points out. There is absolutely no formal guarantee made to RUS that UKR can't join NATO.

It is a natural feeling, , in my opinion, for the populations in the eastern European countries, previously under Russian sphere of influence, to feel nervous. No one in western Europe would like their hard earned peace to be shattered. United states sits far away in the comfort of their home. Their populations have never really experienced the horrors of war since the American civil war. I feel, Europe for its own good should take matters in its own hands to preserve peace in Europe.

History has proven so many times (including the war in Ukraine) that nobody is going to fight your war, apart from yourself.
