How Princess Diana passed off cheap costume jewelry as expensive jewelry. In 1985 in Italy, Diana appeared wearing a pearl choker necklace and luxurious earrings with pearls in the shape of hearts. The next day all the secular press did not get tired of discussing these jewelry. And did not even suspect that they were actually princess bought in a small store Butler & Wilson on Fulham Street for about 50 pounds sterling. The pearl earrings were the Princess of Wales' first purchase at the then little-known Butler & Wilson. And since then, as Lady Di's personal bodyguard Ken Wharf recalls, the woman has visited every two or three months. Simon Wilson, the store's owner, soon ceased to be surprised by the princess's visits. "She behaved like the most ordinary customer, except that she sometimes wore a baseball cap and was with a security guard. She could calmly put the earrings she liked on her ears and ask other customers what she looked like. Those who recognized her almost fainted," the owner will tell us 20 years after the death of his famous customer.

I have drawers full of Butler & Wilson jewellery, I loved Simon's designs and it was so much safer than wearing the real thing every day. It's absolutely true that the Princess just popped in to the shop. I was buying a Cleopatra choker and earrings one day when she arrived, she absolutely loved the pieces but they were the last in stock. Naturally, I said she must have them. About a month later Simon gave me a box, she had asked him to make another set for me. A lovely lady indeed.

I wouldn’t call Butler & Wilson cheap costume jewellery. It isn’t. It’s beautifully designed and I have pieces I still wear from the 80’s. They are unique designs, highly fashionable and incredibly flattering. Not cheap costume jewellery.

That would be about $110 US in 1985. Not garbage & that was a posh little shop in the west end. Heart shaped earrings were the rage at the time and Diana had 2 other pairs of the large heart shaped earrings (that dangled) that I can recall. I had several pair myself that I bought in malls in Philadelphia. Diana didn’t wear costume jewelry very often! She was criticized many times because she wore some magnificent pieces of priceless jewelry with jeans which hadn’t been done before by aristocrats or royals. I can’t believe she’s actually gone. The accident still feels surreal to me. She made this world a much nicer place.
