This was so helpful! I have a question for you from someone well out of their depth. I've got a bunch of the fork in eye ESPixel Stick V3 pixel controllers, but I want to change out the D1 minis for ones with external antennas for better range with my Wi-Fi setup. Can you recommend a board I can pick up off Amazon for a quick swap? Or can an external antenna be added to the D1 mini shown from fork in eye? Thanks again!

is the external antenna for wifi only? I'm planning to make a LoRa project with RA-02 (433MHz) and I was wondering if the antenna used here is compatible with the RA-02 😅 thanks!!

What do you think about range improvements? i.e. d1 mini trace antenna vs d1 mini pro ceramic vs d1 mini pro external rubber ducky?

What is the hot air gun temperature you are using and what is the substance you place over the resistor before heating ? Thanks !

I've removed the 0ohm resistor. And put a wire in between instead.
Strange thing is that the board is still able to access my wifi without the use of the external antenna....
I do get an extra 15db when mounting the external antenna ( going from -77 to -62 db )
Do you have any measurement from before and after?

When I measure with my multimeter on ohm measuring with sound. It looks like its making contact with the external antenna.
And not with old situation to the internal :/

what is the board I should select in the arduino IDE for the D1 mini pro?

Does it actually work with such high gain antenna?
For me, it does not work with a high dbi antenna. I have tried with an 18dbi antenna, 6 dbi etc... But they make it worse.
The best antenna for d1 mini pro is the antenna that comes with the package.

Wait so the D1 mini pro comes with an external wifi antenna port but it's not wired to use it? I just bought one so I could use the wifi antenna and didn't realize I'm going to have change the connection on the shunt...

Nice! I'm using the Wemos D1 Mini as an AP with Webserver to control some RGB LED strips via mobile. Works like a charm but the range is pretty bad. Will try the Pro.
