I looked this up because I was thinking about ancient lenses for scopes and glasses (via crystal skulls, eg the info on the possible manufacture of), but then I am reminded of - magnifying and focusing light, for heating purposes, for cooking, for lighting (also mirrors, as used in scopes too) - another low-tech solution.
Even just the heat increase with glasshouses....well known of, but only earthship designs and the likes seem to use it. Conservatories get kind of planked on where there may be space, but as with the buildings they are attached to, not sited for passive heating. Behind even a window in the sun far north, you are cooking in the heat. So much wasted heat and that reminds me, of boilers, so much wasted heat and condensation / steam. And that reminds me, of how equations for combustion pollution do not ever mention the amount of air (oxygen) that engines breathe in. Nobody mentions this when they talk about CO2 emissions and the likes, of how much O2 is being used up by combustion processes / fires. I was reminded of this important truth - by a so-called mental patient, proving yet again how mad usual society is..
