RADIO TAPOK - Гвардия Петра (Peter's Guard) [English Subtitles]

Narva 1700
When Peter I's forty-thousand-strong army trembled and fled under the onslaught of the Swedes, only three regiments, Semenovsky, Preobrazhensky and Lefortovsky, were left to fight on the battlefield. Regiments stood in the deep snow, blood was falling on it, and from afar it seemed as if they were standing knee-deep in blood. This was the former amusement army of little Tsarevich Peter, which he had raised and turned into his army. After that battle, Peter introduced the soldiers' uniforms and ordered the guardsmen to wear red stockings up to their knees to remember that battle and the steadfastness of the Guards.

I'd love to hear Sabaton do a version of this, just like they did with Defense of Moscow!

Sabaton has: Poltava and Radio Tapok has: Peter’s guard, that’s perfect

Another excellent translation of another excellent song. The Russian Guards could not have asked for a better historical 'origin story'; the regiments that grew up alongside the Tsar standing firm while the rest of the army fell apart around them; I've come to adore the symbolism behind the red stockings, it was always somthing I had dimly connected to guards regiments from my passing intrest in the Napoleonic era, but I had no idea the story behind them. In choosing to "die" instead of "live in disgrace" the three regiments of Narva became living legends. Amazing how the actions of a comparative few can salvage at least some dignity from an otherwise bitter defeat.

I'm distantly reminded of one of the translations of 2nd Corinthians 4 : "8 In every way we’re troubled but not crushed, frustrated but not in despair, 9 persecuted but not abandoned, struck down but not destroyed."
