It needs to be taught. Pretending it didn’t happen is gaslighting a whole population of people already struggling

I was taught the white mythology when I was in school. I'm always surprised when I learn about all the historical facts that I was NEVER taught in school or even college. I would have preferred to be taught actual history.

I never learned any of this stuff in highschool. I learned it from books in the local library.

There has been so much regression in this country. People will think that it's always been this way in the US when it comes to racism, but it hasn't. We were taught about slavery and racism in high school in the 1970s, to no controversy at all. There began to be some regression on the issue in the 1990s with the nation-wide imposition of right-wing media, and now it's honestly as bad as, and maybe worse than, it was in the 1920s, a hundred years ago.

Willful ignorance. But hey, it's 2021; the information is out there. Tell young people it can't be taught in school and they will go looking for it.

Even though people are right when they point out that the academic subject called Critical Race Theory isn't taught anywhere outside of universities, it's more important to make clear that the public will take the term to mean "teaching about the subject of racism, " and that is indeed how the public, especially the white public and especially, of course, the right-wing white public, is taking this, and they are using that phrase to successfully enact moves to ban teaching about racism. It does not help at all to ridicule them by saying, "Ha ha ha! They don't even know that critical race theory is only taught in colleges, the fools!" Pay attention and you'll see that right-wing strategists are using that term to win in their efforts to eliminate teaching about racism, the history of racism, etc. Right-wing strategists were well aware when they formulated this campaign how it would play out with the public, and they were correct. I think it's also important to be clear that even if actual, university-level-content critical race theory were being taught in high schools, it would be a good thing. It is an important subject for people to learn about early in their life as part of learning about racism.

It is an issue of insecurity too. Some people don’t want anyone to know facts, science, race, history, current events, international politics, etc., if those facts make them feel insecure.

Best way to get high schoolers to read a certain book is to tell them it is banned in schools. They will flock to public libraries and bookstores looking for it.

Thirty years ago the book Fahrenheit 451 was banned. A friend of mine who taught high school English held up a copy of the book and said, "the powers that be banned me from teaching this book" and then told kids where they could get a copy. The entire class got the book and read it. Afterward, the questions started because kids didn't understand why they weren't allowed to read it. That led to a critical discussion, hence teaching a banned book about banning books, government oversight, critical thinking, etc.

How could they ban what they never taught in the first place?

My education was a joke... they didnt teach critical thinking skills in school... school didnt teach anything worth while, besides basici math, and reading... Schools should teach critical thinking skills, and students need to spend time studying subjects.... there should be an all day class to study and discuss what freedom is, along with learning the u.s. constitution.... ethics.... History.... Schools should teach you about life, in an impartial way...
