Chineke! – which means 'the spirit of creation' in Igbo – is the UK's first professional classical orchestra made up entirely of BME musicians. The orchestra is the brainchild of leading double bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku, who aims to both celebrate the creative energy of musicians of colour and inspire new generations of instrumentalists.

The concert is conducted by Wayne Marshall and includes Elegy: In Memoriam – Stephen Lawrence by black British composer Philip Herbert, as well as Beethoven's dramatic Symphony No.7.

Recorded in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre. Sunday 13 September 2015. Part of Southbank Centre’s Africa Utopia festival.

Repertoire:
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor: Ballade for orchestra, Op.33
Philip Herbert: Elegy: In memoriam - Stephen Lawrence
Johannes Brahms: Variations on a theme by Haydn (St. Anthony)
Interval
Ludwig Van Beethoven: Symphony No.7

I'm a great fan of Chineke and the Black British Classical  Foundation two greats that ought to be supported.

Second movement is hands down one of the most gorgeous melodies I've ever heard! Beethoven was the ultimate tormented genius.

The performance was great, absolutely incredible. I enjoyed every moment of it. One thing did catch my eye and I can actually see some of the audience looking her way as well. The woman to the right of the director playing the violin, eyes popped out of her head and sat on her face cheeks, "literally".

Indeed, Beethoven was the most disabled minority composer who ever lived (and a migrant, above all)

Do my eyes deceive or did i see a Kanneh-Mason amongst the violinists? Braimah?

Listening to this has me full of emotions. It's so perfectly conducted, with the orchestra watching and listening to eachother, the dinamics are at perfect level at all times. Just beautiful. Thank you

Great job, guys! Thoroughly enjoyed watching and listening to this performance, especially in light of the inclusion of some of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's fabulous work! Keep up the excellent work. Let's hope we can all get through #lockdown and back to some sense of normalcy for the entertainment industry soon. _/\_

In isolation 6 weeks just found this old video.
So many able musicians particularly those of African descent for whatever reason, there are many, did not go onto fulfil their potential. However, with orchestras like Chineke, which I had the pleasure of seeing live at Basingstoke Anvil, the future looks very bright. I got back into classical when I heard Wynton Marsalis recording of the Hayden and Hummel then years later for the first time I listened to the BBC Proms in its entirety Wayne Marshall was host. It is said, that music is a universal language, hopefully through music the world will become blind to the colour of peoples skin.

I'd love to see/hear a performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto by Chineke! in memory and honour of Maestro Bridgetower.

Très bien. Le chef est excellent. Mais la synchronisation son/image est mauvaise, et le timbalier un peu trop furieux !
