My mother summed it up perfectly... "The movie wasn't perfect but really everyone just wanted another episode of Star Trek"

And yet Spock became one of the most loved characters

If Wrath of Kahn hadn’t been so good it would’ve been the end

I loved and still love this movie, it's not for everyone but I loved the story. And the new enterprise... God it was beautiful!

Getting Nimoy to reprise his role was logical

But the ACTOR who was supposed to play Xon WAS in the film. He played the commandant of the station "eaten" by V'Ger at the beginning.

Shatner was right about sluggishness. He was lucky that the fans loved the franchise so much they gave it another chance.

We waited watching reruns for so long we could hardly complain when half the movie was long panning shots of the Enterprise and the story a rehash of The Changeling. Still, it had a satisfying ending and got us stoked for more.

I remember seeing this when I was young and was bored. I did a rewatch not long ago and now love this movie.

The fellow who was to play Xon ended up getting the part of the Epsilon 9 space station commander in the movie.

Another fact

The Motion Picture was originally the pilot episode called "In Thy Image" for a cancelled television show called "Star Trek: Phase II" and before that, was an episode called "Robots Return" from another Gene Roddenberry show called "Genesis II" that was also cancelled

I wondered the same 😢. But thankfully we got Star Trek 2.

The film had MANY behind the scenes problems and was unbelievably rushed. Years later Robert Wise (director) was allowed to finish the terribly rough edges of the film to make it measurably more interesting.
Never the less... It's legendary! ☮️🖖

Star Trek without Spock is just not Star Trek.So sad we lost him to COPD .

The coolist thing about TMP is they still looked relatively young here.

From 2 on they started to really age.

Except for De Kelly. He was older then Kirk and Spock and had appeared to have aged the least between the series cancelation and TMP.😊😊😊😊

It has its nuanced problems, but I never had a problem with pacing that I saw as real-world slow, taking me more into the Trek world than the show that I loved. Director's cut actually helped some, but I do love it now. And Ilia's Theme is one of the best pieces of orchestral music there is.

For all the criticism TMP received the one thing you can say its 'Scope' was trully Epic. You knew you were watching something 'BIG'.

All the sequels, while more entertaining, were also less ambitious.
TMP was a widescreen epic worthy of being watched on the big screen.

Really if you had a chance to see TMP in widescreen vista vision type format or ST2 in something like 16:9 what would you pick?

You'd just stay home? FU.😊😊😊❤

I'd pick TMP. Not for its snappy pacing😂😂😂😂😂Not for the TV acting 😂😂😂😂😂But for the thing very few people mention.

The visual effects and the Jerry Goldsmith score.

The effects help the movie achieve its epic feel and as for the score.

I bought the soundtrack to Logan's Run in 1979 at my local Godwill. It was an LP.

I had checked the novel out of my local library and read that book while the soundtrack played softy in the background on repeat.

Now I had seen Logan's Run in the theater so I was familiar with it. And knew it was based on the book.

As Logan and Jessica left Earth on a rocket, with a shitload on other runners, flying off into space to 'sanctuary ' which was a real place the book the album played 'End of the City' and at the crescendo I finished the book.

Then a few years later bought and listened to Goldsmiths TMP soundtrack and had the same thought I had after reading Logan's Run.

Why didn't they make a movie worthy of all this beautiful music.😢

RIP Jerry Goldsmith(1929-2004)
Enjoy your Eternal Slumber, you've earned it.

Really listen to Goldsmith. I can listen to his soundtracks all day. And not just the sci-fi stuff 😊😊😊😊👍👍🙏🇺🇸🎆

I stand by my life long opinion...this movie kicks ass. And yes, the Enterprise refit / A is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL STARSHIP EVER DESIGNED. PERIOD.

This one is my favorite Star Trek movie. When I was a kid, it was because I loved the redesign of the Enterprise and boy, do you get to see a whole lot of it in this film! When I got a little older, I grew up with TNG and knowing that a lot of TNG was inspired by what was going to be ST:Phase II(which became TMP), when I really rewatched TMP, I realized it feels like an extended version of TNG just with the original crew. It’s more of a thoughtful exploration than an action adventure. I love it.
