A video all about which fabric you should and can use with different punch needles. There seems to be a lot of confusion about which fabric is suitable for punch needle. In this tutorial I take you through my own journey with this subject and explore the options of 6 different fabrics, like linen scrim, monk's cloth, Panama cotton, burlap, cheesecloth and a regular linen.

1-Cheese Cloth (easily breaks)
2- Burlap (cheaper than monks cloth, good with bigger needle, not good with smaller needle)
3-Monks Cloth (good for big and small needle, *Best)
4-Panama Cotton (same as monks cloth, a bit more dense)
5-Linen Scrim (breaks easily)
6-Linen (hard to punch for bigger needle, ok for smaller needles)

I used "unsuitable" material in multilayer (2 or 3 layers) with success. Sometimes I mix them: a good holding layer, and on top something I want to show at the end. This approach normally works out pretty well too. You don't need to sew the layers together, the embroidery will hold them together very well.

This is exactly what I needed to know for my new journey with punch needle art. Thank you very much, it will save me money and time.

i found aida unsuitable. It breaks easily and is harder to tense. In punch needle the fabric needs to be tense as a drum skin, and I found that difficult to achieve with aida. I use monk's cloth and chunky microfibre yarn (such as chenille). It's fast, and makes rugs that are incredibly soft and durable. Not even our house panther can destroy these rugs, and they are easy to keep clean.

Hello from the US. I am really enjoying all your helpful tutorials. I’m still trying to fing the correct size fabric so this was great. Today I bought monks cloth and the size was 7…way to big. I am going to look for 10-14 like you said. I am curious why no one mentions using cross-stitch fabric. It has the criss cross patterns and small holes as well. Have you tried it before?

For those that don't know there are several types of burlap, some stinks and is very course and rough and some that isn't. Thanks for the video

Years ago I used either Weavers cloth or broadcloth ( can’t remember which) also did Winnie the Pooh through Pellon SF101 ironed on a denim jacket. Was adorable!

Thanks a lot for all the information you’re giving us. I came across half Panama cotton, is that ok to use with the thinnest punching needle?

Really informative video - just thinking about Punch Needle and really do not know where to start. I have done Cross Stitch, Embroidery etc. Can you tell me what County I need to look for please? I am being given 18 Count, 16 Count, 12 Count etc - I know this is the size of the hole but do not know what to purchase. Thank you for any help you can give. Linda x

Thanks for your tutorial.
Would it be possible to use a thicker embroidery cotton for the linen fabric, by doubling the five strand thread; so maybe I can use a ten strand thread of embroidery cotton, that would be the same or close to the wool thread in the medium punch needle?

I use Panama cotton in cross stitch and there are several densities you can try if the smaller one is difficult for you to punch through. If you ask your supplier, you can ask if they carry the diferent densities and get samples to see which one works better with each needle.

Great video, thank you. Have you ever heard of huck cloth (used for Swedish weaving)? Would that work for punching with yarn?
