info below: 1 the shounic tracker, and 2, a video disclaimer

|| 2 || small disclaimer, i can't exhaustively search for every single way a human might represent a date, so if there was some mad man who wrote "october twenty third, nineteen eighty five" then yeah i wouldn't catch it, so it's possible there's still EVEN older spooky code in there.

Fun fact: the code used for flickering lights in Half-Life Alyx has exactly the same pattern as the one used in the first Quake; If you compare the flickering light in say, Quake’s E1M1 with one in HLA, the strobing pattern is exactly the same because it is handled by the same code.

if it wasnt for John Carmack releasing the source code for Doom/Quake, we wouldn't have Garfield Kart today.

There's "old code" and then there's "mature codebase". The former gets deleted when better stuff is made and the latter is carefully maintained and survives for decades and you're using some of it right now and don't even realize it.

TF2 isn't a several seasons-old spaghetti, apparently, it's DECADES old spaghetti.

Now it's obvious why no one bothers to touch it

The first bit of code could explain why security guards in Half Life appear to be making beeping sounds with their mouths whenever they punch in access codes into a keypad, though it's not hard to guess in the first place.

Tf2 has spaghetti left over from the Doom/Quake days

"The code that makes character's mouths move according to the sound they're playing"

Ah, the mouth boop code.

Remember that TF2 started life as a _Quake_ mod called Quake Team Fortress. Code for things like player classes, buffs (if those still exists) and game logic, could ultimately then be dated post-Quake and pre-Half-Life.
In fact, the wiki dates QTF release to August 24, 1996. Yes, Team Fortress is _older_ than Half-Life!

Damn even the code is older than most of it's community.

Ok is nobody gonna talk about this "Yahn Bernier" guy who apparently worked on EVERY VALVE GAME TO DATE?

At this point, tf2 source code is a historical artifact

Is it true that there are a few lines of code for physics (like rocket jumping) that doesn't just date back to Quake, but even DOOM? This would mean tf2 shares code with Skyrim even. I love videos like this edit:not just in physics in general the engine

Engineer's teleporter uses the same stock sound effect from DOOM's Teleporter so anything is possible.

I'm gonna be that party pooper guy and point out that opengl isn't a rendering engine, not that it matters for the purpose of this video. Its just an interface or a specification for telling the gpu what to do, you basically use opengl (among other options) to make a rendering engine.

QuickDraw actually predates QuickTime. It goes all the way back into the original Macintosh 128K. That also explains why 64-bit source was never made on macOS. QuickDraw never got ported to 64-bit macOS (it was a part of the Carbon API)
