Oyster Mushroom Harvest & Questions
G'Day Folks. We've been having a crack at growing oyster mushrooms for the first time over the past few weeks. Today's clip was supposed to just be a show & tell but ended up being a harvest clips as well.
Would like to know folks opinion on the browning off & small amount of mould that we're seeing in the bags. From what I've been told it shouldn't hamper the production of the fruiting bodies too much.

Hope you enjoy this look at our new fungus & your gardens are booming.
Cheers all. 🐟 🌱🍅

Cut the flaps the opposite way. So it acts like a roof to shield the fresh substrate to microbes and spores in the air.

Hey Rob! Spores are every where and the mushroom substrate is an ideal environment. So it will always be a race! You need to try to sterilize the room with bleach and sulphur burner. Then create a positive pressure in the room with a HEPA filter drawing the fresh air in. Also try 12 hrs of flouresent light per day, mold likes the dark. I hope this helps!

Cool! There is an island nearby that's full of oysters every fall so I always get my fill. Last year I inoculated some oak logs with hen of the woods and chicken of the woods. They should produce this year. Last year I found probably 20lbs of chickens. Still lots in my freezer! BBQ chicken of the woods pitas are the best!

Very cool👍 I might have to give it a go here in the states. I love mushrooms with breakfast and dinner and growing my own at home would be fun. Look forward to hearing more about the blue mold and see what happens down the road. Thanks for sharing and as always Keep Building👍

I drilled several 1 cm holes all over my box. I also added a small pc fan at the base, on the short end, blowing out. Kept it in a closet as it's too dry where I live.

I have only learned a little as yet mate but got a wonderful crop of oysters. I currently have an experiment that looks fantastic at the moment (I hope to share in due course). I've been told to cut them off very flush against the substrate. Touch as little as possible and make sure you wash your hands well before hand.

Wow! I didn't know growing mushrooms could be so iffy. Hope you get the mold under control.

Oyster Mushrooms, ....some looked white in color while others a orange tan color, but if they're white, they're most probably called 'setas' here in Mexico, and they are GOOD! Simply fried in butter and seasoned with a little salt and pepper or prepared as a vegan ceviche or vegan carnitas(pork meat that has been boiled first, then fried), thumbs up Rob and here's to you having a great Oyster Mushroom harvest! :)

Last time I had mushrooms growing in my home, it was not on purpose. Sneaky little kangaroo mice ( of all critters) were living in the bottom cabinet and munching away on them. Didn't even offer to share them, not even once.

Good stuff mate. The mold spores are everywhere in the air. Hope you get another flush.

Hi Rob, I recently had a go at growing some button mushrooms - with no real success. Only 2 formed, so it was an expensive experiment. I'm gonna have another go ... but you seem to have been more successful. As for the blue mould, I'm not sure mate. As you say it's obviously some sort of contamination. It'll be interesting to see what other folks think it might be. Cheers Adam

If you cut fewer holes you will get bigger shrooms. Is it possible the mold may be the oyster mycelium?

Put some water over the spores and soak some wood chips in them. Then put them where ever you have space and when the weather is optimum.

Been looking at mushrooms myself, shitake plugs look interesting, could get access to fresh logs, they looked nice, but still expensive....

I usually wait till the block is white with mycelium before I cut the bag.
