Contemporary Minoans event at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, organised by Branding Heritage Cultural Organisation
Snapshots of the cultural dialogue and exhibition on the #Minoan civilisation as a source of inspiration in modern design organised at the initiative of cultural organisation #Branding #Heritage (BH) in collaboration with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and the Region of Crete in the frame of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. The aim of the event was to showcase the everlasting influence and wide representation of the Minoan civilisation on the global contemporary design. The event was held on 12 May 2018 under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Hellenic Ministry of Tourism and the Greek National Tourism Organisation.
On 12 of May 2018, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum (Crete) welcomed Branding Heritage and renowned Greek artists that honour their ancient Greek heritage, at an open cultural dialogue under the theme “Minoan civilisation inspires contemporary creators”.
In the frame of the event, the Region of Crete and the Cultural Organisation Branding Heritage honoured the internationally renowned Greek designer Sophia #KOKOSALAKI for her contribution to the promotion of the Greek heritage and, especially her Cretan origin, as a source of inspiration and creativity in the world fashion scene. The honorary distinction was awarded by the founder of Branding Heritage, journalist Katerina Frentzou and the Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis.
Distinguished Greek creators, archaeologists and journalists participated as speakers, among which: Yannis Tseklenis (Designer, BH Expert- video message), Christina Martini (Ancient Greek Sandals), Mareva Grabowski, Dimitra Kolotoura (Zeus & Dione), Georges Papalexis (Zolotas House of Jewels), Polina Sapouna-Ellis (Archaeologist, Jewellery Designer), Faye Chatzi (Fashion Designer), Elis Kiss (“K” magazine, newspaper Kathimerini), Nikos Koutsianas (APIVITA), Dr. Effie Sapouna-Sakellarakis (Honorary Director of Antiquities, BH Expert), Dr. Bernice Jones (Archaeologist, Art historian), Nota Dimopoulou (Archaeologist, Honorary Director of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum), Dr. Stella Spantidaki (Archaeologist, President of the Hellenic Centre for Research and Conservation of Archaeological Textiles ARTEX, BH Expert), Chrysovalantis Gialesakis (Heraklion Silver Goldsmiths Association), Maria Stratinaki (Institute of Vocational Training Rethymno), Doukeni Papafloratou and George Vourakis (2nd Heraklion Laboratory Center and 5th Heraklion Vocational Upper Secondary School). The event was moderated by Olga Stavropoulou (Militos Consulting S.A.).
Illustrations for the visual identity of the event have been offered by renowned Greek illustrator Christos Kourtoglou.
OPENING ADDRESSES were delivered by the Director of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum Dr Stella Mandalaki, the Regional Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis, the General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Sports Dr Maria Vlazaki, the Vice-Mayor for Culture of Heraklion Crete Aristea Plevri, former Vice-President of the European Parliament Rodi Kratsa and founder of Branding Heritage, journalist Katerina Frentzou.
WORKSHOPS of ancient techniques were presented while original contemporary creations with Minoan references were exhibited at the Museum. The exhibition lasted for one month.
