Brabus GmbH (stylized in uppercase) is a German high-performance automotive aftermarket tuning company founded in 1977 in Bottrop (Ruhr area). Brabus specialises in Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Smart vehicles, although since 2022 they have also tuned two kinds.

The company began with Bodo Buschmann wanting to customise his cars. Discovering most existing customisers could not grasp his vision or meet his requirements, he started his own brand. Brabus GmbH was registered in 1977 in West Germany with Buschmann's friend Klaus Brackmann to satisfy German law requiring a company to be established with at least two people. The company name was derived from the first three characters of the founders' surnames (Brackmann, Buschmann). Following the company's foundation, Brackmann sold his company shares to Buschmann for 100 euros.

Brabus wurde 1977 zu Beginn des Höhepunktes der Tuningbranche in den 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren von dem Automobilkaufmann Bodo Buschmann in Bottrop zusammen mit seinem Studienkollegen Klaus Brackmann gegründet. Der Name BRABUS ist die Zusammensetzung von BRAckmann und BUSchmann. Ursprünglicher Unternehmenszweck war die Auslagerung von Randaktivitäten aus der Mercedes-Vertretung des Vaters von Bodo Buschmann. Buschmann erweiterte die ursprünglichen Aktivitäten um das Tuning. Brackmann schied später aus dem Unternehmen aus und arbeitet seither als Rechtsanwalt in Oberhausen. Bekannt wurde Brabus vor allem durch Umbauten des Mercedes-Benz W 126.

1984 baute man einem Mercedes 190 E einen Fünfliter-V8-Motor mit 290 PS ein, 1985 schaffte die von Brabus optimierte E-Klasse einen cw-Weltrekord von 0,26. Später machte Brabus immer wieder durch exklusive Fahrzeuge auf sich aufmerksam. So stellte Brabus mit dem Modell Brabus E V12 auf Basis des Mercedes-Benz W 210 seinerzeit die schnellste Serienlimousine der Welt (330 km/h) vor. Der E V12 auf Basis des Mercedes-Benz W 211 setzt diesen Weltrekord mit 350,2 km/h fort. In diese Variante wurde ein 6,3-Liter-V12-Biturbo mit 471 kW (640 PS) und 1024 Nm Drehmoment eingebaut. Die 2005er Evolutionsstufe des V12-Biturbo-Motors (SV 12 S) hat 537 kW (730 PS) und ein maximales Drehmoment von 1320 Nm, das elektronisch auf 1100 Nm begrenzt wird, um Reifen und Getriebe nicht zu überlasten. Dieser Motor wird im Brabus Rocket eingesetzt (Basis CLS) und neuerdings auch in der aktuellen C-Klasse. Dort heißt er Brabus Bullit. Seine Höchstgeschwindigkeit laut Hersteller beträgt über 360 km/h. Die 2009er Evolutionsstufe mit dem nochmals leistungsgesteigerten V12-Biturbo-Motor mit 552 kW (750 PS) wird in der aktuellen SL- und GLK-Klasse sowie im Maybach 57S und 62S verwendet.

BBS Kraftfahrzeugtechnik AG began in 1970 in Schiltach, Germany, by Heinrich Baumgartner and Klaus Brand as a manufacturing plant for plastic auto body parts. The initials BBS are based on the last names of the two founders and the city in which the company was founded (Baumgartner, Brand, Schiltach).

In 1972, BBS pioneered the development of a three-piece racing wheel, a revolution in motorsport design.[4] This original wheel was called the BBS Mahle, named as such due to its partnership with Mahle for manufacturing.[5] By 1975, BBS had developed the popular cross-spoke design and the counter pressure process. BBS entered into a technical cooperation agreement in 1990 with ASA, a Korean company that was starting wheel production.[6] In 1993, BBS merged the gap between their three-piece forged wheel and one-piece cast wheel with the two-piece design found in the RSII, defining BBS as a pioneer in one-, two-, and three-piece wheels. BBS developed a magnesium forged wheel in 1994 for motorsports use, especially in Formula One, which was over 20% lighter than the standard cast aluminum wheels. In 1995, BBS developed the first one-piece flow-formed cast wheel, with the use of FEM analysis. The first hollow-spoke wheel was also developed by BBS, in collaboration with Porsche and Kuka, in 2000.[7] Many of the design elements that BBS has developed and popularized over the years have gone on to be replicated in the automotive and aftermarket industry, such as stepped-lip barrels, Y-shaped spokes, colored center caps, and lug covers.[1]

In May 1987, BBS had its initial public offering, and continues to be traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
