as Swagata, whose baby loss came after a miscarriage and an induced abortion, explains, "I was searching for 'loss mums' like me online - to find support, to grieve, to talk about our angel babies
Swagata was 37 when she gave birth to her twins, lovingly named Gamma and Gannu, on 13th January 2020. Her five month pregnancy was complicated. Gamma passed away after 12 hours and Gannu after 48 hours, but if you ask her about her children she always replies with a smile on her face and talks about the bond she had with them.
In spite of the shame and silence around the topic, Swagata decided to share her story with those around her. “I came to know a lot of people around me had gone through similar experiences and had never spoken about it, they opened up to me when I told them about my twins,” she says. Bereaved mothers began approaching her on social media since they had no one else to talk to about the taboo topic.
“Outliving your offspring is the worst possible thing that can happen. It breaks a person. A few people can create something meaningful out of their grief”, she says. For Swagata, her grief led her to a mission to fight the silence around child loss in India and help bereaved mothers recover. Swagata decided to help mothers going through similar experiences by creating a community of bereaved parents who share stories of child loss, pregnancy loss and infertility.
