Unboxing Boston: What It's Like Living in Boston, Massachusetts

Is everyone in Boston crazy or what? Are people in Boston stuck up and rude? And does Boston have the most die hard sports fans of all?

We’re gonna answer those questions and a whole lot more. Like we’re going to talk about what it’s like to live in Boston, what all the different neighborhoods are like, and even talk to people who live there.

Boston. One of America’s finest cities. There’s tons of stuff to do here, it’s relatively safe and it’s EXPENSIVE. But it’s expensive in just about any coastal city in this country, come on now. Boston folks are tough and opinionated. But once you crack that outer shell, they’re pretty cool underneath. Boston is not necessarily an unfriendly place, but don't expect anyone to say hello to you in passing.

Where are the good and bad areas in Boston and what parts of the city are good for you? Well, in order to know that, we should look at a map and see the different areas. Then we can look at each area one by one.

This is Boston. As you can tell, there’s lots of great areas and some really bad ones. Another couple themes we’ll see are that Boston is being gentrified FAST and it’s really expensive to live in the Boston metro area. Like double the national average. But that high price tag gets you good quality, everyone.

The crime is not too bad. If you measured the largest cities in the country, Boston doesn’t rank in the top 100 for bad crime. So that’s good.

Politics wise, this is a VERY liberal city. It actually ranks as the 5th most liberal city in the country when you measure voting patterns and past administrations.

A quarter of the population here claims Irish ancestry and that’s by FAR the highest in the country.

The job scene here is great and there’s a booming tech scene in Boston. Despite the fact that there’s a bunch of local smart college grads, sometimes, these tech companies can’t find enough people to fill all the open positions. City wide, only about 5% of Boston is out of work, putting it towards the bottom when it comes to the number of people out of work of all major US cities.

As you can see, the streets are really clean, and the parks are generally well kept.

They say if you say Boston in the mirror 3 times with the lights off, Mark Whalberg will show up to beat you up.

Boston has three major recreational pastimes:
1. Politics
2. Sports
3. Getting even

I just got back from Boston. I think I have a new favorite US city. I essentially traversed the entire downtown, to the North End, Dorchester, and even the outter areas. Never once felt like I was in danger or anything. Great culture, crazy drivers, confusing roads, and so many Dunkin donuts. Great place and I had fun, thanks for having me Boston

You’re right, when you get to know the people in Boston, they’re actually really nice, one time I was lost on my way to Fenway Park and there was this dude that took me all the way to the ballpark by subway, of course he was there too lol

My husband & I lived in Boston & worked at Mass General for 5 years - it was truly wonderful, but this was in the 1980's. We moved back to Australia & were the only two doctors where we worked who were experienced in treating gunshot victims! Would love to go back to have another look around.

I lived in North End and it was the best experience, at least in regards to food and ease of transportation. I seriously had the best dinner at Mamma Maria. I like it way more than New York City.

Went to Boston last month with my bf (from outside of Springfield lol) and I honestly was so impressed! It seems like a European city in the older parts, plus it also had much history 💕

Revere is also becoming gentrified. There are new condominiums being developed along Revere Beach, the oldest public beach in the nation.

As long as you don't walk the streets by yourself wearing a New York Yankees cap, you'll have a fun time in Boston!😆

I’m from outside of Sacramento and lived in Dorchester for a year. The whole area was just completely different than from what I was used to. I felt like I was in a movie when I’d go into back bay or the north end. It’s definitely my favorite big American city. I saw a plethora of homeless on methadone mile. If the winters didn’t suck and not so expensive I’d live there permanently. Now I just own a home with my wife in the Sacramento suburbs instead lol.

I live about a half hour outside of Boston and I can tell you from experience it’s very expensive but it’s a sports town and you can enjoy yourself while you are there. Some parts are sketchy ofc but there’s a lot to do and the north end is really nice.

Great video as usual, Nick. 💓It’s definitely true that there are many things to do and it has interesting history. I worked in Boston for a while when I lived in Massachusetts.

Boston is a great city to visit and explore but so insanely expensive you can't live there. I loved taking the train to work and around downtown. Always clean and on time.

I live in Boston and I know a lot of people who broke up with their partner to focus more on their career. That was extremely accurate.

There's no where "nice" to go if you don't have the money. Any actual nice city is still expensive! Burlington is really nice and you're not getting anything cheap.

So clean!
BTW - Back Bay was built in the later half of the 1800's, so it's not really "new" except maybe in Boston terms.
BTW2 - Many Bostonians love the Winter. The more cold and snow, the better! And nothing beats Autumn in New England.

I love Boston. My aunt and uncle live there. It is a very walkable city. Such good transportation with the subways and buses. My aunt and uncle don’t own a car and don’t need me. if they want to go out of town they rent one. They rent one to go to New Hampshire and Vermont or Canada. So much history there. It’s definitely worth a visit. I will go again one day soon in a few years.

When I was a younger guy, my brothers and friends would head up to Boston a couple weekends a year for bars and fun. That stopped a long time ago when things (hotels) got just way too Expensive. Great fun town though.
