Pycharm is a broken software, if you install matplotlib 3.7.1 and try to run your code on the IPython console of Pycharm, your plot / picture will be frozen and eventually crash the kernel. This is a known bug that was corrected at some point but now is back again on the newest version. Very frustrating, I was forced to install matplotlib 3.5.4 to get it to work. Again, such a shame it seems the last few versions of the software are made by chatGPT or some untrained AI.
