You probably can't do that in a bodyshop but when I worked as a mechanic, every time I got a car in the shop, I would open the driver window enough to get an arm through there as part of my routine. I have seen too many colleagues waste precious time trying to unlock a car with the keys inside!

Also if you bend the coat hanger the right angle you can use it on locks on top like the plastic thing you used did the same method
