Incorporate mini tennis into your daily tennis routine. In fact, most professional tennis players start every practice with mini tennis drills and play out points. It is important to learn how to hit the ball gently because you will encounter situations in every match where these skills can come in handy.

I encourage everyone to incorporate mini tennis into every practice. It doesn’t have to be long, 5 minutes is plenty. There is a reason why you see professional players warm up with mini tennis. It can help you become a more versatile player and handle balls around the net with ease.

The mini-tennis drills listed:
1. Warmup (standard topspin/soft flat balls down the middle), 0:59
2. Running exchange (one player always plays cross-court, the other always DTL, 1:24
3. Running exchange, all balls hit with a slice, 1:45
4. Rollie ball (ball starts on the net, rolls down to the court and starts an exchange), 2:12
5. Bounce game (ball has to bounce on our own courtll first after leaving the racket), 3:32
6. Double hit game (bounce the ball on the racket before returning it to the other player), 4:28

I have used mini tennis as the start of practice sessions coaching High School and Teaching Junior Tennis Camp. It teaches control and adds much needed purpose. I like to start with one player close to the net and a partner at mid service box who gently drop hits forehands. Five feeds to the forehand volley of Net player who volleys back to forehand of feeder. Then five balls to net players backhand. Players change positions and repeat sequence. Then go to a forehand/ backhand side to side sequence. You would be surprised how much control and touch a player needs to go five then ten shots without missing. The feeder should always have extra tennis balls to instantly keep the drills moving. In a team/ camp situation you can get 4 players per Court. I learned this drill way back on the 1989 when I got USPTR certified and it’s been a mainstay in my coaching/ teaching ever since. These types of drills do require lots of skills to perform properly. Drills build skills. Wax on Wax off🙏

My hitting partner and I always start with mini tennis before playing and because we find it hard to keep the ball in the service box we use a junior red ball. I never knew about these different games and that’s a good tip about not using a backswing!

Nice video, Nick. Short and on point.
I played Bounce Game on my training, but I always wondered what's the point of the game? What am I developing?

These are great. I love the double hit game! Another one that I like is the “runaround rally”. Basically players rally down a line (singles or center) and every ball that land on the forehand side of the line is struck as a backhand, and visa versa for the backhand side. With six players on a court you have every person sweating within minutes.
