Grammar: Word order mistake

Can you see the mistake in this sentence?

My former son’s girlfriend rang me the other day

Yes, the former is in the wrong place. It should be “My son’s former girlfriend” because the former (meaning previous) is referring to the girlfriend, not the son, so the adjective should be placed before the noun you want to modify.

In this sentence, you can also use ‘old’ instead ‘former’: “My son’s old girlfriend”

Other sentences using “former””
- Despite everything, she bore her former boss no animosity.
- My former husband is a journalist.
It’s possible to use old in these sentences but if “old” can in any way be misunderstood to mean ‘not young’ then it’s better to use “former”.
