My guesstimate for the Tesla "best battery"... By the end of the year, a tabless dry electrode cell, which weighs 10% less, COSTS Tesla 12% less and has an energy density (volume) 15% higher. Don't expect it to be PRICED for less though. I'd really like to see a Powerwall 3 too, not because there is anything wrong with the Powerwall 2, but the price of Powerwall 2 has remained the same in the UK for nearly 4 years, despite the manufacturing cost dropping all the time.

Great show again Matt.

I don't care about range, Tesla's just need to be cheaper. These cars are unbelievably expensive in AU/NZ.

Honestly at this point for me to be “blown away” I would have to hear 500 miles of range or more on battery day.

On Battery Day, I think we will all be blown away.

"Should you wait to buy your Model 3? No."
Except, yes. After seeing the frunk redesign, I'm going to Osbourne Effect the Model 3 until it gets the heat pump installed. As a northern mid-westerner, the heat pump is a game-changer for efficiency in the frigid winter months.

Elon has said something like, he's blown away by something they'll be revealing on Battery Day. People have used that to speculate there will be a big technology innovation that causes some massive improvement in battery specs, but I wonder... What if it has everything to do with manufacturing capacity? Elon has been saying forever that Tesla is supply-constrained rather than demand constrained, so what if they reveal that next year's battery manufacturing capacity will be 10x what it was last year? That would be massive.

I wonder when Tesla will make a recycling plan to close all loose ends with sustainability

Immediate timeline:
S&P inclusion anyday.
9/22: battery day
10/1-3: q3 delivery #
10/31-11/2: q3 er

HOLDing!!! Or accumulating. No selling. Possible battery day drop even on insanely good news. Just like autonomy day and cybertruck reveal (I bought next day dip). Just accumulating $ now for potential battery day drop or correction. Keeping all existing shares to drive up demand especially after s&p inclusion and more short squeezing. Q3 deliveries/er will be massive!!!

*Every day* is a battery day, if you charge it :-)

The reality is going to really struggle to match up to the hype that's built up over battery day.

Excellent job explaining the technical aspects of the product thank you for sharing

Half of my neighbours now own plug in hybrids or full electric cars 🚙 and the difference it makes in ambient noise from the days they owned diesel cars is in itself bliss, it’s so much more peaceful (although door slamming and dogs barking is a lot more obvious and ironically annoying 🤦🏻‍♂️)

I don't think a 600 mile range is necessary, but 400 to 500 is. Going on road trips is a staple of Americana and this is still a significant disadvantage to owning a battery powered vehicle.

For the average person looking at wanting to own a Tesla some day, I think the most important thing is price. The battery doesn't have to be cheaper, but if they can use less to go as far, that could be a win. Average Joe doesn't really care about battery chemistry. He cares how much it will cost compared to ICE cars.

Best guesses:
1. DBE manufacturing technique for manufacturing breakthrough (~ 10x improvement in manufacturing speed, 30% lower cost)
2. Silicon Nanowires (SINS) for energy density / charging speed breakthrough
3. New cell chemistry to debut in plaid model S, roadster, Cybertruck and most importantly SEMI (needs to be <= 22k lbs GVW). (Model 3/Y continue to use 2170)
4. V2G to debut on Cybertruck, coupled with Autobidder, this would provide a second way to monetize your Tesla in addition to robotaxi fleet.

Great info Matt, thanks!!!!

There are a lot of folks following and have their own channels on Tesla. Have to say you do a great job of laying out what Tesla is doing in a concise and understandable way. Some I just have a tough time following what they are trying to say. They repeat and repeat the exact same words but repetition does not mean they are doing a good job of conveying what they wish for me to understand. So with that I thank you.

Given Tesla's history on adding improvements, and the length of time that Battery Day has been delayed, any near term improvements in battery technology have been shipping in new Teslas for a while already.

Some of us drive a lot for business purposes and a 300 mile range is NOT going to cut it. I want a 500 mile range to have plenty of "margin".

In Europe, dont buy the Model Y until Berlin production gets going. That US$49k for the LR AWD turns into €64k, which is way more than what the exchange rate + VAT + tariffs would warrant. At least with EU production, they can escape the tariff (10%), which they should pass on to the buyer straight away.

Tesla can drop the price when the Berlin production gets going
